Best Dairy-Free Cheese

This is the best dairy-free cheese sauce that I have ever tasted! I've tried several brands and recipes that just don't taste anything like cheese, but this one really does! It looks and tastes just like real melted cheese sauce. This dairy-free cheese recipe is delicious and very easy to make!


  • 1/2 cup Brazil nuts (or raw cashews), soaked in water for at least 30 minutes and then rinsed
  • 2 tablespoons tahini or miso paste 
  • 1 sweet pepper (yellow, orange or red will work!), roasted (or raw)
  • 1/2 cup nutritional yeast flakes
  • Juice of 1/2 lemon
  • 1/4 tsp. cayenne pepper
  • 1 tsp. turmeric
  • 1 tsp. sea salt
  • 1/2 cup water

Optional Ingredients: You can vary the taste of this cheese depending on the meal you are making!

If you are making Mexican, you could add chili powder. You can also add a roasted jalapeno (then remove seeds), if you like it spicy!

Going Italian? Add 1-2 cloves of raw or roasted garlic.

If you want a light, white cheese sauce instead of bright orange, use a yellow pepper instead of red and hold the turmeric!

To make it extra creamy, add a non-dairy milk, such as almond or coconut, instead of the water.

Be creative! The possibilities are endless! As long as you have the base of nuts, water, sweet pepper and nutritional yeast, you can pretty much add any seasonings you would like!


  1. In a Vitamix or blender, combine all ingredients.
  2. Blend on high until smooth. This takes a several minutes to ensure that the nuts are fully processed and smooth. You can adjust the amount of water and nuts to reach your desired consistency!

I highly recommend making extra! You can refrigerate it for up about 4-5 days. You can add it to many recipes throughout the week.

You can make a nacho dip! Layer refried beans, dairy-free cheese sauce, chopped onions, tomatoes, black olives, etc.

You could toss this sauce with almost any vegetable for a delicious side dish! Here, I sauteed white beans and arugula in coconut oil and stirred in leftover cheese sauce. Yummy!

One of my favorite ways to eat this cheese sauce, is on a veggie burger! I topped this Sunshine Burger with creamy, dairy-free cheese sauce, onions and avocado. It's so good!
