You can achieve vibrant health!
I am Andrea. The founder of B Simply Healthy, a certified Reiki Master/Teacher (RMT), and lover of all things that have to do with natural health and wellness. On my homepage I introduced you to the mission of B-Simply-Healthy.com and told you about many resources you will find on this site. My goal is to help you achieve vibrant health and happiness and to bring balance to your mind, body, and spirit.
So, what led me to create this site?
When I was in high school I can vividly remember having lingering pain in various parts of my body. Sometimes I would wake up in the middle of the night and my feet would be tingling and throbbing. It progressively got worse, including severe lower back and neck pain.
We lived in an area heavily populated with ticks, so I thought it might be lyme disease. But, the test came back negative. By the time I got to college the pain was widespread. Everything seemed to ache from my head to my toes. My elbows and shoulders burned. I was exhausted all of the time, and had difficulty sleeping.
The doctors thought it was mono, but again the tests came back negative. I could hardly stand the pain anymore. It was extremely frustrating because I didn't look sick, so many people in my life didn't understand or realize what I was going through on a daily basis.
The years passed by and I continued to suffer in silence with no answers and little hope that I would ever feel better!
One evening while I was driving home from work, I became very dizzy and everything was blurry. I had to pull off to the side of the road for several minutes. I put my head on the steering wheel and started to cry. Was this yet another symptom of a mysterious disease that was plaguing me? I shook it off as exhaustion, maybe it was just a headache due to a long day at work. I continued to push myself to get through the days, living on high doses of extra strength ibuprofen. I felt like I was a 25 year old living in an 85 year old body.
The day I'll never forget…
When I was 25, they discovered that I had 2 large cysts on my ovaries. I needed surgery to remove them. The recovery was something I cannot even describe. After the initial relief that the cysts were benign, I had succumb to severe pain. I could not get out of the bed. It was so excruciating I thought I was going to die! The recovery was unusually long and painful for such a procedure. This could not be normal, I thought.
Finally, I received an answer. My doctor ran test after test, ruling out rheumatoid arthritis and lupus. She diagnosed me with fibromyalgia. I had heard of it before, but didn't know much about it. I was just relieved to finally have a name to put the pain and mysterious symptoms I had spent all of my adult life coping with. My Dr. put me on medication to help treat it, but told me there was no cure for fibromyalgia.
I spent the next two years on prescriptions of Lyrica and Ambien. I was also prescribed Cymbalta, which I stopped taking after a few days because I couldn't tolerate the side affects! The prescription drugs brought temporary relief, but as soon as they wore off, the pain returned. I was taking 2-3 Ambien a night just to fall asleep. I could no longer stand feeling controlled by meds, so I decided to take matters into my own hands. What did I have to lose? I began my own inquiry into alternative healing and natural health.
I use to eat the typical Standard American Diet (I now believe the acronym is SAD for a reason!). I lived on fast food, soda, and coffee during college. I was popping 5-6 ibuprofen a day to deal with the pain. I didn't get much sleep and was under a lot of stress. Wow! My adrenals must have been going berserk! I never became severely overweight, but definitely packed on an extra 15-20 pounds during this time. I would binge diet, trying every new fad that came along.
It is this same (SAD) kind of diet, consisting of a lot of meat and processed foods, that I believe also contributed to my parents getting cancer and my grandfather losing his life to cancer. Both of my parents were diagnosed with cancer within a couple years of each other, both in their early fifties. It was very difficult to see them go through surgery and treatments for this horrific disease. This was a huge wake-up call me for me! I was desperate to learn more about the role our diet plays in our health.
The puzzle pieces come together...
Could changing the way I eat help improve my symptoms and prevent me from following in my parent's footsteps? During the next several years, I learned from extensive reading and from my own experiences, that the answer was a resounding yes!
I started seeing a naturopathic Dr. I learned the importance of eating organic, whole foods, and why I needed to reduce my consumption of meat and dairy. From someone who loved Bic Macs and Arby's beef-n- cheddar, I can tell you that making this switch wasn't easy! I decided not to follow another fad diet, but commit instead to a new way of life. I read Eat to Live by Dr. Joel Fuhrman. This book completely changed the way I thought about food and I realized that food could be my medicine instead of prescription drugs! I began by following these 7 steps to improve my health.
I started to notice improvements almost immediately. This caused a snowball effect that made me even more determined to learn all that I could about the body's ability to heal naturally. I was getting results physically, but it wasn't until I addressed other areas in my life that I began to feel more balanced and vibrant. The absence of disease does not make you healthy. If I cured all of my fibromyalgia symptoms through dietary changes alone and stopped there, I would still be lacking balanced, vibrant health.
I wanted to feel alive, balanced, energetic and happy on all levels. This required me to get the other areas of my life in check, not just my diet. Such as stress, insomnia, and unhealthy relationships, just to name a few. Through a combination of healthy eating, yoga, meditation, nutritional supplements, exercise, Reiki, and a spiritual practice, I found the ingredients for good health. I feel like the puzzle pieces are finally starting to come together. And for the first time in many years, I feel like I'm living in a 35 year old's body; not an 85 year old's.
One of my greatest passions is teaching. While I have spent most of my career teaching in schools, I now feel like I have the opportunity to reach a broader range of people. Having this knowledge and experience has made a believer out of me. I know it's possible to achieve good health without depending solely on modern medicine and costly prescription drugs that come with horrible side effects.
There is another way. I believe strongly that I was led down this path so that I could help others attain good health. I know that many people, like you, would like to live a more healthy, vibrant life that is in balance, and free from disease. I combine my background in education with what I have learned about health, to provide some tools and simple solutions that can help others achieve vibrant health like I have.
By teaching people about ways to bring balance and health to their whole self, body, mind, and spirit, I have the opportunity to put my knowledge to use for a greater good and to serve a higher purpose in my life. I hope that my story inspires you to seek the balance you are looking for in your life and that the materials on this site are useful to you!
